The CP Journal + Job Search Skills + Disconnecting from Tech & More
Profiles in Preparedness #20
Next week, this email will land in your inbox under a new name: The CP Journal.
While the name is changing, what we’re doing isn’t—we’re still focused on helping you get left of bang.
This change marks the final step in an 18-month transition to consolidate all the different platforms we’ve used over the years for our business into a single, more powerful system, which we talk about in the article below. By doing this, we’re not just streamlining our work—we’re unlocking new ways to support you.
Two Big Things to Know
Academy Subscribers Get More: All paying subscribers to the Academy now have full access to our Tactical Analysis Program, the video-based course teaching the behaviors covered in Left of Bang. This includes 50+ lessons and 30+ practice exercises to sharpen your observation skills. If you're a subscriber, you can access it here.
A New Information-Sharing Tool is Coming: We’re weeks away from launching a brand-new tool designed to help organizations—not just individuals—get left of bang. This website change was the last step we had to take before we could take it live, but the feedback from our test group has been incredible, and we’re excited to roll it out soon. Stay tuned.
For a deeper dive into why we made this move and what’s next, check out this article.
This Week‘s Reads
Here are a few standout reads from this week with insights, ideas, and perspectives that caught my attention.
Article | The Value of Things Undone. This article is a great reminder from Alex Fox about the tradeoffs we accept when we let a phone notification interrupt us and bring our attention back to our phone for "entertainment." When we say yes to those things, "we are saying no to every other use for those minutes, hours, and seconds of focused awareness." For me, remembering that there are really smart people who are incentivized to "keep me engaged," is the reminder I need to put my phone in another room and return to the real world around me.
Podcast | How to find work you love with Bob Moesta (Jobs-to-be-Done co-creator, author of "Job Moves”). I don't know how I came across this podcast, but I’m glad I did. Beginning from the premise that finding a job is a skill, this podcast provided me with a terminology to talk about driving forces that led to different changes in my career and goes in-depth on finding work that energizes you. Whether you’re looking for a job, hiring, or continuing to find clarity about the work you love, give the podcast a listen.
Article | Opportunity in Chaos. This article resonated this week - here are a few quotes for you to consider. “There are no shortage of diatribes online about the state of global leadership, whether your guy is making the necessary realignments long called for but never enacted, or someone left the baboon door open at the zoo.” “A plan for your future, a roadmap to get from here to there, is your greatest asset in these chaotic times.” “You must embrace the chaos, learn to operate throughout in an emotionally stable state and if you choose, to find the moments that offer chances to shine, the ones only possible in disruptive times.”
Article | TDIH: Battle of the Alamo. Santa Anna demanded surrender. Texans responded with a cannonball. “Remember the Alamo!” became a rallying cry for the Texians in the wake of the battle. A little over a month later, the Texians would win the Battle of San Jacinto in a mere 18 minutes.
