Your Weekly Forward-Looking Intelligence Brief from The CP Journal's Watch Office
With a weekend of protests planned across the country, here is a “play” to ready your organization for potential unrest.
Bottom Line Up Front (BLUF)
Here are the highlights of the week ahead. Scroll down for a deeper analysis and the sources of information for any specific section:
Weather: Nationwide, the primary weather threats this week will be heavy rainfall/flooding in the South-Central U.S.and heat in the interior West. Elsewhere across the country, typical early-summer conditions prevail – scattered thunderstorms (some severe) in the Plains/Midwest and Southeast, and a late-week rain system for the East Coast – but no large-scale extreme events are anticipated at this time.
Safety & Security: The national public safety climate for the coming week is marked by elevated activism and large-scale events. Recent experience shows protests are becoming increasingly confrontational and there are over 1,400 “No Kings” protests planned across the country this weekend. We recommend reading the Safety & Security section for details on the protest activity this week.
Health & Medical: Nationally, the public health outlook is stable with low activity for common respiratory illnesses, but an unusually large measles outbreak is ongoing. No new public health emergencies have been declared, though the opioid overdose crisis continues. Environmental health conditions are typical for early summer – generally good, aside from isolated air quality issues as smoke from the wildfires in Alberta, Canada, enters the U.S.
Cybersecurity: Elevated cyber threat level as the U.S. faces a barrage of ransomware attacks, aggressive state-sponsored hacking (targeting critical infrastructure and data stores), and ongoing exploitation of software flaws.
Critical Infrastructure: Nationwide, critical infrastructure is stable entering mid-June. Forecasts highlight emerging summer hazards – a warmer-than-average pattern is building across much of the country, raising wildfire risk in the West and bringing the first heat waves to the Plains and Southeast.
